While many factors may contribute to implantation failure , one may be the inability of the embryo to hatch from the zona pellucida ,necessary step prior to implantation .  
 
Microscopic interruption of a small segment of the zona, termed assisted hatching ,has been demonstrated to improve implantation rates, especially in the subset of patients with prior history of poor IVF outcome .
